1. What It Is (Chapter 2) 2. This is the story of a young girl with emotional problems, struggling to cope with life under the thumb of her authoritarian psychologist. Her problems are both relieved and compounded by her fledgling friendship with another patient, a boy who has his own inner conflicts to resolve. 3. fantasic.proboards25.com/index.cgi?board=other&action=display&thread=11496097574. Ever since I started studying psychology and sociology at A-level, the question of what definies a mental disease has been stuck in my head, and I've never really answered it to my satisfaction. To me, this novel (should it ever be completed) is a study of how society constructs mental illness where none exists, and the lengths to which a person should go to protect their right to individuality and the sanctity of their own mind. It's a long, ongoing project, so any critiques you've got are much appriciated; I struggle to get the thing down on paper, never mind to a good standard Onward!

1. The Chair of Wind and Darkness - Rewrite and Part II
2. It is - obviously - parts one and two of a short story/novelette I'm currently writing. It... could be considered fantasy, but it's not sword and sorcery - it involves a man who, having been relieved of command in a very idolized military, feels he has lost his grip on life's purpose. He finds himself entwined in what could be described as a type of Cassandra Complex (the ability of foreknowledge combined with the agony of being unable to do anything about it), the visions of which he follows through and participates in as time wears on in real life. Still myopically focused on militaristic glory and honor, and misinterpreting the results of his actions, he - through various visions and dreams that he's made real - finds himself on a one-way mission to sacrifice everything he has for an empire, old and glorious that he never got to see; and loses himself, and what he's fighting for, in the process. (This empire is in decline... the government is not looking at his doings as beating out the corruption of everyday life in search of something nobler... hence he is no longer protected by those in power... those who fear losing power...)

4. Actually, I got this idea from free-writing. I came up with the image of the Chair of Wind and Darkness (the presence of which is explained at some point in the story), and then just as quick, wrote my character. It seemed like something that needed to be written, that required very little effort - like someone was telling me what to write and I was just putting it down. I got the idea of the so-called 'flash-forwards' (cassandra complex) from a novelette I just read that was rife with intermittent flash-back scenes - I looked forward to trying something different. And for some reason, in all my writings, I have been interested in the hero who does not want to be the hero, and, while operating under his own sense of honor and moral code is in some way violated without his knowing it and used to an advantage, sort of the ultimate lowly low of humanity, when one realizes that one has been (a) fighting a war without realizing it or (b) fighting a war for different reasons, without being aware of the consequences, and simultaneously becoming aware that's it's far too late to turn back.
It's getting there slowly. A long project that I'd perhaps like to make into something more than a short story. Any ideas, comments or critiques would be hugely helpful.

(1) Feather and Stone ...(it's a working title, obviously.) (2) In the Six Countries, hatred and prejudice threaten the balance of power; the humans are inches from rebelling against the rule of the arrogant winged wizards. When a demure (but supremely unlucky) Sewardian maiden and an unorthodox, thirteen-year-old magical prodigy are thrown together unexpectedly, they must not only overcome the innate biases that separate them but also stop a war. (3) fantasic.proboards25.com/index.cgi?board=fantasy&action=display&thread=1149384872(4) I really, really adore this story, and hope to (after much polishing) have it published one day. I am, however, not sure how other people will like it, so all opinions are greatly appreciated!
