OK, I have 2 rather different problems for the story I'm working on atm... help would be appreciated for either, or both if possible.
1. The two main characters have a fair age difference between them- never specified, but around 15 years or so. They're going to end up together at the end of the book, but I don't want them directly together during the main part of it. After my lovely friend proofread the WIP for me, she pointed out I've fallen into a bit of a trap- the relationship could easily be interpreted as a father/daugher thing, and I DON'T want that to happen. Ew. So how do I make the relationship work romantically, minus the romance?
2. How do you shoot a pistol? Description/instructions anyone? Easy enough to bluff, but I don't want to make any stupid mistakes.
Help very very much appreciated!

Lol, I have no clue about the pistol, but as to your first question...
Just how old are your characters? So they're fifteen years apart but an 17 year old and 32 year old is going to be interpreted differently than a 23 year old and a 38 year old. I guess... my best advice is make sure both characters are old enough to ensure that the reader sees both of them as adults, however diferent in age, not one as an adult and one as more of a kid.
... or something like that...

Thanks a lot. Methinks she's 27, he's 42, or somewhere about.
Oooh!
Jane Eyre! Before Jane and Mr. Rochester get together you get the feeling from them with is EXACTLY what I wanna capture, if that helps.

Lol, I never read Jane Eyre.
But no, QN, if they're aged like that, I see absolutely no problem with it. It happens in real life, in nothing of a father-daughter type way. Actually, lol, I'd sort of like to read it...

Hmmm... I'm more worried that readers will decide (not knowing that there's gonna be romance- snag is it's not actually a romance novel) that they have a family-type reltionship then be disappointed/nauseated. Haha, I'm my own worst critic...

Actually, QN, to tell you the truth, I just read a story that sort of has what you're describing in it... The main characters actually lived together (not as a couple, you understand, because they were both short on options and had no other choice). Eventually their relationship evolved beyond on of symbiosis and - now I believe these characters were at least ten years apart - the effect over-all, coupled with the plot, actually turned out so much more powerful and... just beautiful than I think it would have otherwise.
And, lol, that definitely wan't romance fic either...
Seriously, I think it would work out nicely. Lol, post it when you get it done so I can read it... ^_~

Good to know. Just hope my writing's good enough to get the same effect, hehe. (Do you know where I can get this story?!) Don't think it's really postable though. It's already over 6,500 words long and I've barely started, hehe. I have a genetic inability to write short stories. If anyone has any tips for the pistol thing I'm still open...

Lol, I don't remember the name of it. But I assure you, I was definitely better than it would have been had the characters been close in age...
Hah, I'm only on Part III of the Chair of Wind and Darkness and that's already over 6500 words...
As to the pistol... I would direct you probably to Reas E'lil... ^_^

Thank you! x
Woah, this place is great, could have used this when writing my last novel-thing.
I do have a penchant for substantial age differences, no idea why.

1. Romantic without the romance? What do you mean?
2. Point and shoot.
Okay, okay, that's much too simple.
First, you have to make sure the gun is clean, ESPECIALLY if it's a pistol. If it isn't, then it's going to be a pain in the butt to fire, and that's bad. It might even backfire. That's worse.
Either put the bullet in directly into the barrel or put a clip in so that you can have multiple rounds. There will probably be six shots.
Turn off the safety. The safety might be a little button that you press, or something depending on your model. I'm mostly a rifle shooter, so I'm not very aware of what's going on. Check out a gun shop for specific models.
Aim. Remember that pistols and guns in general will generally go high for the novice.
Pull the trigger.
And that's about it. I think.

1. That's a bit weird, um, how do I explain it... sexual tension, to be blunt. But not as straightfoward as that.
2. You're an angel!! A beautiful, gun-wielding angel! Thank you!

Hahaha... First of all, the guy has to be mature and stuff. Because of this, he's going to have a more mature reaction. He's not going to flirt and more likely than not, he's going to want to have sex with this girl, if they're in our world anyway. That would just seem wrong. So there's some conflict. And she may be naive. She might not want him to love her and may resist her. They should talk and be able to communicate with each other. And at times, they should touch. Maybe he kisses her, but only on the top of her head and only because she's done something so brilliant that he can't help himself. And maybe she realizes that when he smiles, he can be handsome. So no sex, but definitely tension. And, if you manipulate it right, you'll have people writing interesting fanfics of your story.

*facepalm*
Hmm, maybe I should go into detail of the characters a bit more, if that'll help.
There's a bit of a class difference too, he's quite upper-middle-class, and she works for him as a maid. They're close as friends, and you're told that before the book starts they've formed an unorthodox friendship- but it's still tentative as both characters are quite shy. Basically, as the book goes on their feelings for each other grow, but neither of them realises the other feels the same way and so won't really admit it.

Hehe, that sounds great. Sure ya can't post it? Even in pieces? (Maybe I actually read your story in a dimension operating on a different plane of time...? ^_^ But it does sound really nice. I just think... it's so completely random and awesome that you're writing the exact same sort of story that I loved so much - as far as I'm concerned, QN, your success in imminent.) Lol, figure out a way to post it in pieces. That's an order. ^_~
