Hey, guys, just need some quick help here, opinions, thoughts... In this one story I'm writing called The Chair of Wind and Darkness, I need a title for my emperor/king/lord. I'm not sure I want to call him the "emperor" because I'm afraid it will give it an archaic feel... "king" sounds decidedly European... hmm. I thought about making it a more militaristic title, like The Chronicles of Riddick had the Lord Marshall, but I want to make the point that he runs more than just the military. Any ideas, guys? (Hehe, make it speedy, I'm trying to get this up and posted by the tomorrow...)

Hey, thanks Jack!
That's a lot of suggestions... Lol, I'll go see which one's fit best. Any other ideas would be good too, but these'r great right now.
*hugs Jack* ^_^

I was going to consult my trusty thesaurus, but... yeah... Jack totally stole my thunder. If none of those appeal, though, you can always play the fantasy writer's trump--make up a title of your own, individual to the culture in question. Might be a little more challenging, but the individuality pays, IMO.

Hmm, that's a good idea, too, Fand.
Perhaps, perhaps... *strokes chin thoughtfully*...

What about Tsar/Czar? or, tsarevich? Ya know, Imp, I did consider the Czar because I guess it has sort of a Soviet feel to it, but I didn't really want it to be blatant... I dunno. It's something to consider... And hey, thanks MH! ^_^ (Oh yeah, Imp, one more thing... As much as I would like to just call this guy the Czar and be done wiht it, I don't want the reader to go "Oh! This must be Russia!" and then get all ticked when they realize that it is indeed not and that there is actual no rank of a Kasimov in the Russian military and that the navy is not actually called the meth-maritime and, well... you get the idea. Do ya think I should still chance it, though?)

I may, of course, be a bit more informed than most of the general reading public. But I would be terribly surprised if anyone mistook Kasimovs, etc. as Soviet Russian military ranks. You've got a vaguely slavic background in language - that's noticieable; and you have a Russian's brooding, descriptive mindset for character and tone. Everything else seems invented - though well invented as it has that peculiar weight of history that few fantasy author's seem to recognise as imperative. So, in the end, I think you could chance tsar - or a form of it. It is, afterall, only the slavic (specifically Russian) form of Caesar. ^_^ I hope the detailed explanation is helpful rather than just and ear-full. ^_^" (I enjoyed reading most of your third part...now I just have finish...)

Whew! Thanks Imp! I didn't really think it seemed much like Russia when I wrote the first two parts, but my brother skimmed over it just barely and five seconds later said, "Why are you so darn queer for the Russians?" Lol, trying to avoid a similar reaction among others... But I think I'll take you advice (regardless of Reas's apparent opinion on the atmosphere, lol...). I think in this draft I have it as the "Lord Sovereign", but that was really just a place holder so I could post it with the name in there... I'd like to change it to Czar in the next draft... maybe you're right, despite Reas's apparent misgivings. And, heh, no earful. I'm grateful for y our opinion.

Lord/Overlord and the equivilant in other languages always works. They fit most settings, and can refer to more than one level of authority.
