Just finished reading it in English class. Alice Walker blew me away with her ability to write about taboo subjects in our culture and actually make a lot of sense out of them. When I first started reading the book I hated it because it was like rape, abuse, some more rape, some more abuse, some racism, etc. But by the end I really enjoyed it. It made me think a lot about subjects such as racism, domestic violence, and love. The writing was annoying in the begining because of the dialect and the lack of quotation marks or anything to mark dialogue. But once I got used to it I could appreciate the beauty of it. When I got to the part where Shug says something about noticing the color purple in a field and how God wants you to see the beauty of life I really started to enjoy the book and understand the some of the meaning.

Oh! I read this book too, and also thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought Miss Walkers' style of writing was absolutely beautiful, as you did. I've seen the movie as well, but I thought the book was much better. Have you seen the movie, and did you like it? (to IceCreamMan)

I suppose I'm not really qualified to judge which is ebtter - obviously - but I thought they did a pretty good job with the movie, so I can only imagine how good the book must be. I like how Walker writes, though, a yway - I read some exceprts from The Color Purple in one of those Write Plot Better books I got at Border's. ^_^ Lol, I like the title, too, really sweet and innocent and at the same time heavily symbolic.

I read it just last week! It was going to be for English Studies, but then my teacher said I had to read something more challenging. I read The Colour Purple anyway, just not for school. I loved it! When I first started it I was worried it was going to be all rape and abuse and tradgic stuff, but I really got into it and I thought it was fantastic!
I've read a book with bad grammar and no quotation marks on purpose before, so it didn't really bother me much and I barely noticed it.
I haven't seen the movie, but I've got one of the songs from it on piano. It's called "Miss Celie's Blues" so I think it's the song Shug sings for her.
