Found this yesterday. It's called yWriter and allows you to create chapters and scenes, move scenes around, record the goal, conflict, and outcome of each scene, and add a quick summary to each scene.
Unlike a regular word processor this does not put little squiggly red lines under words you've spelled wrong or tell you that the sentence you just wrote isn't really a sentence, it's a fragment. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it: you can focus more on actually writing and beat down your inner critic, or you might end up making tons of spelling errors that will drive you crazy.
You can also create an outline: what this does is basically creates the bones of your story, and then you can write or cut and paste each scene into the program later.
I guess it's supposed to be able to merge all of your scenes/chapters into one document, but I haven't tried this yet (I'm not even close to being near that point; I'm still on my outline!).
I downloaded this program to transfer my sloppy outline, which is written on wrinkled lose leaf paper, onto the computer so I can actually read it. Making an outline is not the easiest thing to do: you have to add little [scene] and [chapter] tags whenever you start a new scene or chapter respectively. But it's easier than doing it with a word processor, where the format of the outline moves all around and drives me crazy.
Oh, and by the way, it's free. That's a plus, right? None of this ninety dollar software just so you can get your novel done.
If anyone wants to try this out, maybe you could post back here and give your opinion on it: whether you recommend it or not?
