But most of the lounge/randomness topics aren't about writing...and therefore aren't fit to be in a writing community. That's what I think she means.

Nate never started Randomness on YWS and said, "Guys, keep it to writing topics." If he did, Sam (the one above), your comment might have some credibility.
Not everything in life is about writing. This is about developing a community to support people's writing. Randomness is a part of that.

If you stuck to strict writing and didn't have any reliefs you'd end up with blockages... We need the outlet for our... hmm creativity? in ways other than writing - - ways that don't require much thought and ways that fufill us without work =P Basically, it's good for the soul. =P

It's not going to help you become a better writer, so why one would want to visit a Randomness forum on a writer's website is beyond me.
That's all I've got to say.

Thank you all for your opinions on this matter.
Yes, the Randomness is one of community builders and, yes, it is fun to hang out in there and get to know people. I never said that the Randomness was not useful for the community. Please note that I have not taken away the Randomness, but merely wiped the slate every week. You still have the same chance to talk, chatter and otherwise have fun.
